Abstract
Biotechnology is the integrated application of biochemistry, microbiology and process engineering with the aim of the technical application of the potential of microorganisms, cell and tissue cultures and parts thereof. The lecture is composed of two parts that will be presented on 24th January 2025 and 7th February 2025. In the first part, we will describe the basics of biotechnology, including the historical pathway as well as different examples of the current biotechnology, and will also present the biotechnical-related topics from DPP-Biotech covering the spectrum of biomedicine, biomedical engineering as well as pharmaceutical and industrial biotechnology. In the second part, we will focus on the field of antibody engineering and show the generation of therapeutic antibodies. Here, we will describe the idea of protein architecture, present the generation of monospecific and bivalent antibodies and show the important steps for the analysis of these molecules, including quality control and binding to an antigen. Finally, the generation of bispecific antibodies (with binding sites for two different antigens) will be presented.
Referenten:
Dr. Antje Lohmüller
Antje Lohmüller studied Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences at University of Applied Sciences Mannheim, completing her degree in 2001. She earned her doctoral degree in 2005 with a thesis on the Expression and characterisation of biopharmaceuticals in heterologous expression systems. Afterward, Antje Lohmüller gained experience in the pharmaceutical industry as a Scientific Support, Email Campaign, and Web Content Specialist in Belgium and for the USA. Transitioning to academia, she managed the Master’s program in Bioprocess Engineering designed for working professionals at University of Applied Sciences Esslingen. Since 2016, she has been the program manager for Chemical and Bioengineering and Process Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. Since 2021, Antje Lohmüller has also served as coordinator for the dual cooperative doctoral program in biotechnology (DPP-Biotech).
Dr. Oliver Seifert
Oliver Seifert is a senior scientist in the laboratory of Roland Kontermann at the University of Stuttgart and leads the bispecific antibody group. He is an expert in the field of antibody engineering with more than 15 years experience. His scientific research covers development and characterization of novel antibodies specific for therapeutic applications with a focus on the development of bi- and multispecific antibodies for tumor therapy. Since 2021, Oliver Seifert is coordinator for the dual cooperative doctoral program in biotechnology (DPP-Biotech). Oliver Seifert studied Technical Biology and obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Stuttgart.
